1. তার নাম তালিকার বাইরে ছিল।
= His name was off the list.
2. তার নাম তালিকায় ছিল।
= His name was on the list.
3. তার নাম তালিকায় অন্তর্ভুক্ত করা হলো।
= His name was included on the list./ His name was listed.
4. তার নাম তালিকাতে যুক্ত করা হলো।
= His name was added to the list.
5. তার নাম তালিকা থেকে কেটে/বাদ দেওয়া হলো।
= His name was crossed/left off the list.
6. গানটা তালিকার একদম নিচে ছিল।
= The song was at the bottom of the list.
7. গানটা তালিকার নিচের দিকে ছিল।
= The song was near the bottom of the list.
8. গানটা তালিকার একদম উপরে/ শীর্ষে ছিল।
= The song was at the top of the list.
9. গানটা তালিকার উপরের দিকে ছিল।
= The song was near the top of the list.
10. গানটা তালিকার নিচের দিকে/ উপর দিকে গেল।
= The song moved downwards/upwards on the list.
11. গানটা তালিকার একদম উপরে গেল।
= The song jumped/shot to the top of the list./ The song topped the list.
12. গানটা তালিকার একদম নিচে গেল।
= The song fell to the bottom of the list.

কিছু প্রশ্ন ও উত্তর:
✓ ”…… out of the list” না লিখে ”…… off the list” কেন লিখলাম?

[NOTE: বস্তু স্থির থাকলে onto/ on to ব্যবহার করা যাবে না।]

"বিড়ালটি টেবিল (এর উপর) থেকে লাফ দিল।" -এর ইংরেজি:
The cat jumped out of the table. (incorrect)
The cat jumped off the table. (correct)

”বিড়ালটি এখন টেবিলের বাইরে।" -এর ইংরেজি:
Now the cat is out of the table. (incorrect)
Now the cat is off the table. (correct)
[NOTE: off গতিশীলতা এবং স্থিতি দু'টোই বুঝাতে পারে।]

দেখা গেল, তলের (surface) ক্ষেত্রে আমরা on বা off ব্যবহার করি, in বা out of নয়। তবে container বা box জাতীয় কোনোকিছুর ক্ষেত্রে in, out of ব্যবহার করি। যেমন,
He ran into the room. Now he is in the room.

He went out of the room. Now he's out of the room.
[NOTE: out of গতিশীলতা এবং স্থিতি দু'টোই বুঝাতে পারে।]
একইভাবে, আমরা লিস্ট তৈরি করি কাগজের পৃষ্ঠায়, যা একটা তল। সুতরাং
His name was on the list. (……in the list নয়।)
His name was off the list. (…… out of the list নয়।)
এবার বলুন, "তিনি আশঙ্কাজনক অবস্থায় আছেন (অর্থাৎ এতটাই অসুস্থ যে মারা যেতে পারেন)।" -এর অনুবাদ কী হবে।
He's in the danger list. (বুঝতেই পারছেন এটা ভুল!)
He's on the danger list. (correct)
আবার "তিনি এখন আশঙ্কামুক্ত (অর্থাৎ মৃত্যু ঝুঁকি নাই)।" -এর অনুবাদ কী হবে?
He's out of the danger list. (এটাও ভুল, তাই না?)
He's off the danger list. (correct)
আমরা যখন কাউকে তালিকায় অন্তর্ভুক্ত করি আমরা বলি, We included him on the list. আবার তালিকা থেকে বাদ দিলে বলি, We left him off the list.
কিন্তু আমরা যখন কাউকে কোনো activity, collection, discussion বা group-এ অন্তর্ভুক্ত করি তখন বলি, We included him in our group/in the team. আর বাদ দিলে বলি, We left him out of the team.
list এর আগে in বসতে পারে। তবে আক্ষরিকভাবে তল (surface) বুঝাবে না তখন। যেমন, These books scream out to be included in a list of favourites.
আবার document এর ক্ষেত্রে on নয়, in ব্যবহার করি। কারণ, একটা container যেমন কোনোকিছু ভিতরে ধারণ করে, একইভাবে document-ও information ধারণ করে। e.g., You'll find it in the document. (…… on the document নয়।)
একইভাবে কোনো list-এর ভিতরে হিসাব-নিকাশ বা তথ্য সঞ্চিত করে রাখলে in ব্যবহার করি। e.g., Each student's points were totalled and entered in a list.
