If not = possibly even = (আরে না) বরং/ এমনকি হয়তো
[প্রথম স্টেটমেন্ট এর চেয়ে আরো extreme কোনোকিছুকে support করার জন্য if not ব্যবহার করা হয়।]
1. Sometimes, that standard is quite difficult, if not impossible, to achieve. (মাঝেমাঝে ঐ স্ট্যান্ডার্ড অর্জন করা বেশ কঠিন, এমনকি হয়তো অসম্ভব।)
2. I will be ready in a couple of weeks, if not sooner. (আমি দু' সপ্তাহের মধ্যে, এমনকি হয়তো তারও আগে রেডি হব।)
3. Many, if not most, scientific papers are presented orally at scientific meetings. (অনেক, এমনকি হয়তো অধিকাংশ সায়েন্টিফিক পেপারস সায়েন্টিফিক মিটিংগুলোতে মৌখিকভাবে উপস্থাপন করা হয়।)
4. He's a good tennis player, if not a great one. (সে ভাল টেনিস খেলোয়ার, (আরে না) বরং বিশাল মাপের খেলোয়ার।)

1. Let's meet tonight if not sooner.
2. This is different, if not unique, for two reasons.

বি.দ্র. নিচের বাক্যগুলোতে if not একেবারেই সাধারণ অর্থে ব্যবহৃত হয়।
1. I'll go, if you are going. If not, I'd rather stay (at) home. (তুমি গেলে আমি যাব। যদি না যাও, আমি বরং বাড়িতেই থাকব।)
2. Are you ready? If not, I'll go without you. (তুমি কি রেডি? যদি না হও (রেডি), আমি তোমাকে ছাড়াই যাব।
3. Do you want that cake? If not, I'll have it. (তুমি কি কেকটা চাও? যদি না চাও, আমি এটা খাব।)
সুতরাং ওপরের বাক্যগুলোর অর্থটা একটু স্পেশাল! গুলিয়ে ফেলবেন না। 😊
