 1. aboard (also adv.)

[on or onto a plane, ship, bus, or train; 

Welcome aboard flight 109 to Paris. (প্যারিসগামী ফ্লাইট ১০৯-এ স্বাগতম।)

Nobody is allowed aboard the plane without a security check. (নিরাপত্তা পরীক্ষা ছাড়া কেউ বিমানে অনুমোদিত নয়।) 

We spent two months aboard ship (= on the ship). (আমরা দু’মাস জাহাজে কাটিয়েছি।)

The flight attendant welcomed us aboard.

(বিমানবালা আমাদেরকে বিমানে স্বাগত জানালো।) 

2. about 

(i) সম্পর্কে/ব্যাপারে: What was she talking about?

(ii) বিভিন্ন অংশে: 

We wandered about the town. (আমরা শহর ঘুরে বেড়ালাম।) 

He looked about the room. 

(iii) প্রায় (adv): 

It happened about two months ago.

3. above (also adv) 

(i) উপরে (সংস্পর্শে নয়):

Look on the shelf above your head.

(ii) উপরে; চেয়ে বেশি:

This toy is for children aged four and above.

(iii) (পৃষ্ঠার) উপরে (adv):

Please send the items to the address shown above.

4. across

(i) (এপার থেকে) ওপারে:

I walked across the road.

(ii) উল্টোদিকে; ওপারে:

There’s a bank just across the street.

5. after 

(i) পরে:

We went swimming after lunch.

(ii) following in order (ক্রমানুসারে) পরে:

H comes after G in the alphabet.

(iii) (কোনো জায়গা অতিক্রম করার) পর:

Turn left after the hotel.

(iv) (পশ্চাদ্ধাবন বুঝাতে) পিছে/পিছনে:

We ran after him.

(v) (কারণ বুঝাতে) পরে:

I’ll never trust her again after what she did to me.

(vi) [ + all] সত্ত্বেও:

I can’t believe he was so rude to you after all the help you gave him!

(vii) [minute + after/past + hour] (ঘণ্টা টা মিনিট):

It’s five after three. (তিনটা পাঁচ বাজে।) [AmE]

It’s five past three. [BrE]

(viii) after all = হাজার হলেও; আর যাই হোক:

You can’t expect to be perfect – after all, it was only your first lesson.

(ix) day after day, year after year, etc. = দিনের পর দিন, বছরের পর বছর ই.:

We go to the same place on holiday year after year.

(x) be after something = কোনোকিছুর খোঁজে থাকা:

What type of job are you after?

6. against

(i) (প্রতিযোগিতায়) বিরুদ্ধে/বিপক্ষে: 

Liverpool are playing against AC Milan.

(ii) (হেলান দিয়ে বা ঠেকিয়ে রাখা বুঝাতে) সাথে:

Push the bed against the wall. 

Put the bicycle against the tree.

(iii) (সংঘর্ষ বুঝাতে) সাথে: 

He hit his head against the wall. 

(iv) be against something = কেনোকিছুর বিপক্ষে/বিরুদ্ধে যাওয়া বা থাকা:

Shakil wants to buy a motorcycle, but I’m against it.

(v) (নিয়ম-কানুনের ক্ষেত্রে) বিরুদ্ধে: 

It’s against the law to sell alcohol to teenagers.

7. along

(i) (রাস্তা, নদী ইত্যাদির দৈর্ঘ্য বরাবর) বেয়ে; দিয়ে: 

We walked slowly along the road. 

(ii) ধার ঘেঁষে; ধার দিয়ে; পাড় দিয়ে:  

There is a row of new houses along the river.

8. alongside

(i) পাশে:

A car pulled up ( = stopped) alongside ours.

(ii) (একই সময়ে বুঝাতে) পাশাপাশি:

Organized crime continued to flourish alongside the mainstream economy.

9. amid

(কোনোকিছুর দ্বারা পরিবেষ্টিত বুঝাতে) মাঝখানে/মধ্যে:

The town sits amid gentle hills and dense forest.

He finished his speech amid tremendous applause. 

10. among

(i) (কোনো দল/ভীর ইত্যাদির) মাঝখানে; মধ্যে:

He got lost among the crowds.

Among the options, which is your favorite?

(ii) (কোনো দল বা শ্রেণির নিকট বুঝাতে) মাঝে:

The decision will be popular among students.

(iii) (তিনজন তার চেয়ে বেশি জনের মধ্যে ভাগ করে দেওয়া বুঝাতে) মধ্যে:

She divided the cake among the children.

11. around (also adv.)

(i) চতুর্দিকে:

They sat around the table.

(ii) (ঘূর্ণন বুঝাতে) বৃত্তাকারে:

A helicopter was circling around, looking for somewhere to land.

(iii) (বিভিন্ন অংশে বুঝাতে) 

I spent a year travelling around Asia.

(iv) (নিকটে বুঝাতে) আশেপাশে; কাছাকাছি:

Is there a supermarket around here?

Will you be around next week?

(v) (কোনো নির্দিষ্ট সময় থেকে একটু আগে বা পরে যেমন, ‘৭টার দিকে’ বলতে ঠিক ৭টায় না বুঝিয়ে একটু আগে বা পরে বুঝায়) দিকে: 

They will arrive around four o’clock. (তারা ৪টার দিকে পৌঁছুবে।)

(vi) (স্থানান্তর বুঝাতে) একজন হতে আরেকজনকে বা এক স্থান থেকে অন্য স্থানে:

Could you pass these forms around, please?

(vii) (পিছনে ঘোরা বুঝাতে)

He turned around and looked at her.

(viii) (ঘুরতে যাওয়া বা আসা বুঝাতে) 

Fariha is coming around this afternoon.

I'm going around to my sister's ( = her house). 

12. as - হিসেবে: 

She works as a waitress.

They use their spare bedroom as an office.

13. astride - দুই পা দু'পাশে ঝুলিয়ে:

She sat proudly astride her new motorbike.

14. at

(i) (নির্দিষ্ট কোনো স্থানে) এ; য়; তে:

We met at the station.

She was sitting at the table.

[at the top/bottom/end etc (of something)]

At the top of the stairs, she paused.

(ii) (নির্দিষ্ট কোনো সময়ে) এ; য়; তে:

The meeting starts at three.

(iii) দিকে; অভিমুখে

I threw the ball at him.

(iv) (কোনো অনুভূতির কারণ বুঝাতে) এ; য়; তে:

He was delighted at the result. 

We were surprised at the news.

(v) [good/bad/helpless etc + at (doing) sth] এ; য়; তে:

He’s good at making friends.

He’s an expert at making things out of junk.

She's bad at maths.

She's helpless at managing people. 

(vi) (কত মূল্যে/গতিতে/বয়সে/মাত্রায় তা বুঝাতে)

He was driving at 80 miles per hour.

You should have more sense at your age.

(vii) (কোন অবস্থায় তা বুঝাতে) 

The country is now at war.

Many children are still at risk from neglect or abuse.

(ix) (কোথায় পড়াশোনা করে তা বুঝাতে) এ; য়; তে:

Is Nasif still at school?

Habib was a student at Oxford in the 1960s.

15. before

(i) আগে/পূর্বে

She arrived before me.

(ii) (যাত্রাপথে কোন জায়গা আগে পাওয়া যায় তা বুঝাতে) আগে; পূর্বে

The hospital is just before the bridge.

(iii) (কোনো ক্রম বা তালিকায় অবস্থান বুঝাতে) সামনে; আগে:

K comes before L in the English alphabet.

(iv) কারো বা কোনোকিছুর সামনে:

I’ve never performed this before an audience. 

16. behind (also adv.)

(ii) পিছনে; পিছনের দিকে

Close the door behind you.

There’s a hotel behind the station.

(ii) (সাফল্য বা অর্জনের ক্ষেত্রে পিছনে থাকা বুঝাতে) পিছনে:

Our team is three points behind the winners.

(iii) (সমর্থন করা বুঝাতে) পিছনে:

The group is 100 percent behind her.

(iv) (কোনো ঘটনার কারণ বা ব্যাখ্যা বুঝাতে) পিছনে:

I wonder what’s behind this change of plan.

Perhaps a bitter experience lay behind her anger.

17. below (also adv.)

(i) (নীচের অবস্থানে বুঝাতে) নীচে

He could hear people shouting below his window.

(ii) (পরিমাণ বা মাত্রার ক্ষেত্রে) নীচে: 

The temperature there rarely drops below 22 degrees.

(iii) (পদে বা মর্যাদায়) নীচে:

No one below the level of senior manager was present at the meeting.

(iv) (পৃষ্ঠার) নীচে:

18. beneath (also adv.) - নীচে:

He hid the letter beneath a pile of papers.

19. beside - পাশে:

She sat down beside him.

20. besides 

(i) ছাড়াও; পাশাপাশি: 

Do you play any other sports besides football?

(ii) এছাড়াও; তাছাড়া; অধিকন্তু: (adv.)  

She won’t mind if you’re late – besides, it’s not your fault.

21. between

(i) (দুটি জায়গা/ব্যক্তি/বস্তুর মধ্যে অবস্থান বুঝাতে) মধ্যে:

The town lies halfway between Florence and Rome.

I sat down between Tuhin and Mim.

The wall between East and West Berlin came down in 1989.

(ii) (মধ্যবর্তী সময় নির্দেশ করে) মধ্যে:

The shop is closed for lunch between 12.30 and 1.30.

Please call back between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

You shouldn’t eat between meals.

(iii) (কোন কোন ব্যক্তি/দল আলোচনায়/প্রতিযোগিতায়/যুদ্ধ/চুক্তি ইত্যাদিতে জড়িত তা বুঝাতে) মধ্যে

The match between England and Germany will be worth watching.

(iv) (দুই বা ততোধিক স্থান বা কেনোকিছুর মধ্যে সংযোগ বা সম্পর্ক বুঝাতে) মধ্যে:

Trains running between Dhaka and Sylhet were delayed.

It also reveals the relationship between exploration, science and technology.

(v) (দুই বা ততোধিক ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুর মধ্যে তুলনা করতে) মধ্য: [এক্ষেত্রে প্রায়ই contrast, difference, distinction, gap, parallels, similarity এই শব্দগুলো ব্যবহৃত হয়।]

(vi) (পরিমাণ বুঝাতে — প্রথমটার চেয়ে বড় এবং দ্বিতীয়টার চেয়ে ছোট) মধ্য:

The temperature will be between 20 and 25 degrees today.

(vii) (দুই বা ততোধিক ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুর মধ্যে ভাগাভাগি বুঝাতে) মধ্যে:

We shared the cake between us.

The school's library currently has just a handful of books to share between 300 pupils.

(viii) (দুই বা ততোধিক ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুর মধ্যে বেছে নেওয়া বুঝাতে) মধ্যে: 

She is given a choice between her job and her boyfriend and she chooses her job without a second's hesitation.

Users will now be given the possibility of a choice between different suppliers at an earlier time. 

☞ Between or among? 

(i) ব্যক্তি, বস্তু বা কোনোকিছুকে স্পষ্টভাবে আলাদা করে বুঝালে সাধারণত between ব্যবহার করি। তবে আলাদাভাবে বা পৃথকভাবে না বুঝিয়ে যদি এক দল/গুচ্ছ কেনোকিছুর মধ্যে বুঝায় সেক্ষেত্রে among ব্যবহার করা হয়। যেমন,

Our house is between the woods, the river and the village. (আমাদের বাড়ি বন, নদী ও গ্রামটির মাঝখানে।)

His house is hidden among the trees. (তার বাড়ি গাছগুলোর মাঝে লুকানো আছে।)

I saw something between the wheels of the car. (গাড়িটার চাকাগুলোর মাঝখানে আমি কিছু একটা দেখলাম।)

Your passport is somewhere among all these papers. (তোমার পাসপোর্টটা এসব কাগজের মধ্যে কোথাও আছে।)

They hid among the reeds.

I put my bag down between my feet.

(ii) Uncountable noun এর আগে among ব্যবহৃত হতে পারে:

They found an envelope full of money among all the rubbish.

(iii) Each এর পূর্বে between হয়। কারণ, each থাকায় noun কে পৃথকভাবে বুঝায়।

There seems to be less and less time between each birthday. (প্রতিটা জন্মদিনের মধ্যে সময় যেন কমতে থাকে।) 

(iv) দুইয়ের অধিক ব্যক্তি বা দলের মাঝে ভাগাভাগি বুঝাতে between বা among যেকোনোটাই ব্যবহার করা যায়: 

He divided all his money between/among his children and grandchildren.

We shared the work between/among the five of us.

(v) পার্থক্য/সম্পর্ক বুঝাতে between ব্যবহৃত হয়:

There are enormous differences between languages.

(vi) among = one of; some of; belonging to; included in অর্থাৎ কোনো গ্রুপ বা দলের একজন/সদস্য/অন্তর্ভুক্ত বুঝাতে: 

A British woman was among the 54 victims of the disaster. (এই দুর্যোগের শিকার ৫৪ জনের একজন হলো একজন ব্রিটিশ নারী।) 

Snakes are among the animals most feared by man. (সাপ সেই সকল প্রাণীর অন্তর্ভুক্ত যাদের মানুষ সবচেয়ে ভয় পায়।)

He has a number of criminals among his friends. (তার বন্ধুদের মাঝে বেশ কিছু ক্রিমিনাল/অপরাধী আছে।) 

(vii) ‘অন্যান্য বিষয়/জায়গা ই. ছাড়াও’ বুঝাতে ‘among other things/places/factors etc’ এভাবে লেখা হয়। অর্থাৎ অনেক ব্যক্তি বা বস্তু রয়েছে, কিন্তু কেবল একটা বা দুটো উল্লেখ করা হচ্ছে বুঝাতে among ব্যবহার করি।  

At the meeting they discussed, among other things, recent events in Japan. (সভায় তারা অনেক বিষয়ের পাশাপাশি জাপানের সাম্প্রতিক ঘটনাগুলো আলোচনা করেছে।)

‘What was wrong with the job?’ ‘Well, the pay wasn't good, among other things.’ (‘এই চাকরিতে সমস্যা কী ছিল?’ ‘কী আর বলবো, বেতন ভালো ছিল না, এছাড়াও আরও সমস্যা তো আছেই।’)

Among other things, Churchill was an accomplished writer and historian. (চার্চিল ছিলেন একজন সুদক্ষ লেখক ও ইতিহাসবেত্তা, আরও অন্যান্য গুণ তো ছিলই।) 

Among other things, Nadim was accused of attempting to bribe court officials. (নানারকম অভিযোগের সাথে, নাদিমকে কোর্টের কর্মকর্তাদের ঘুষ দেওয়ার চেষ্টা করার অভিযোগে অভিযুক্ত করা হয়েছিল।) 

22. beyond (also adv.)

(i) (দূর প্রান্তে বা অপর পাশে বুঝাতে) ওপাশে:

Our house is just beyond the bridge.

Beyond the river, cattle were grazing.

(ii) (কোনো নির্দিষ্ট সময় পেরিয়ে) পরেও; পরে পর্যন্ত; পেরিয়ে; পার হলে:

Not many people live beyond the age of a hundred.

The ban has been extended beyond 2003.

The disco went on until beyond midnight.

(iii) (সীমাকে অতিক্রম করা বুঝাতে) ঊর্ধ্বে; বাইরে; ছাড়িয়ে:

Their integrity is beyond question.

My computer was damaged beyond repair.

Due to circumstances beyond our control, the performance has had to be cancelled.

(iv) (উপলব্ধির বাইরে) [be beyond sb = কারো পক্ষে বোঝা সম্ভব নয়]

It’s beyond me why anyone would want to buy that house.

(v) (পরিমাণ, মাত্রা বা সীমাকে ছাড়িয়ে) চেয়েও বেশি; ছাড়িয়ে: 

More people are choosing to work beyond retirement age.

Inflation has risen beyond the 5% level.

He could count up to a hundred thousand million now, and beyond.

Our success was far beyond what we thought possible.

(vi) (সামর্থ্য বা নাগালের বাইরে) বাইরে; ঊর্ধ্বে:

Such tasks are far beyond the scope of the average schoolkid.

The handle was just beyond my reach. 

Such expensive luxuries are beyond the reach of ordinary people.

(vii) (না-বোধক বাক্যে) ছাড়া; ব্যতীত:
